The past few days I’ve really gotten into social bookmarking sites like del.icio.us, simpy, and clipmarks. While looking into these sites, I wondered if the same could be done with wordpress - where basically, I could convert my catagories into tags. Well, not only did I find a plugin to allow me to start tagging my posts, I also found a way to import certain del.icio.us bookmarks into my blog as well.
While I’m not sure how useful all of this will be on this particular blog. It may be really useful on another that I’m thinking of starting up…

One Response to “Del.icio.us and the art of tagging”

  1. Actually, if you are using WordPress, your categories are automatically tagged as tags with the rel="tag" generated from almost all Themes. To add additional tags, you have to “do” things and the Ultimate Tag Warrior by Christine Davis make the whole process easier. But realize that there are some issues you need to consider with using tags on your site. You need to really think about how and what tags you use. It isn’t about the tagging services but how the tagging services use tags to help users find your site, and this is the tough part.

When you set up tags to del.icio.us, Technorati, and others, you are inviting the visitor to leave your site to find out what others are saying about the tagged topic. Consider using tags to help the user find related topics on your blog instead. The tag relationship is still found by tag services’ crawlers, but you are keeping the user on your site with the option to visit the tagging services for more and related information. Something to think about.

    Keep up the great work!
