I know it’s been really quiet here, but lots of stuff has been happening…. like the Summer – for instance…. and Will’s Birthday… Oh, and my older sister Mel got engaged too….
Those are just the highlights. There were other things that happened, and hopefully I will get around to posting them… or at least, posting more often. We’ll see how that goes.

I received an email from my sister this evening with a big announcement. (The following is a modified version. References to all other employees of COH were deleted with respect to their privacy):

…Melanie R. Palomares, M.D., M.S., has chosen to expand her role within the Division of Population Sciences by transferring to the Department of Epidemiology and Outcomes Research to assist [...snipped...] in their development of the City of Hope Center for Cancer Survivorship.

As both medical oncologist and epidemiologist, Dr. Palomares’ experience and skills uniquely position her to play a key role in the extension of the research and clinical activities of Center for Cancer Survivorship to the adult cancer survivor population. In addition, Dr. Palomares is an established expert in cancer prevention, which includes both primary prevention in healthy populations and secondary prevention in cancer survivors. This new role will allow her to develop secondary prevention trials for the cancer survivor population, as well as continue her ongoing primary prevention trials.

[...snipped...]

Dr. Palomares will continue her clinical activities with the Department of Clinical Cancer Genetics within the Division of Medical Oncology….

I cannot express my pride and admiration for all the work that Melanie has done in the fight against cancer and it seems as if her hard work, along with the work of many others, is beginning to pay off.
Congratulations Mel, and thank you for all you do!

PS: On a related note, the planning for the upcoming Loris Relay for Life is underway. The event will take place at Heniford Field on May 11.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all! Our Christmas Eve tradition of opening presents at midnight went as it has for the past few years. The youngest ones are too young to stay up all night so they all slept until it was time to open them up. They stayed awake just long enough to open up their presents and say thank-you… and then they were ready to go back to sleep. Jen, Terry and their boys didn’t make it to SC this year, and they are missed, but well do I understand. I was the one to actually break that tradition of the whole family being together last year. It was good seeing Melanie tonight. It seems as if Christmas is the only time I get to see her… and that is truly a shame. Hopefully, we will have some time tomorrow to chat some more. Unfortunately, I have to be back at work on Tuesday.
The boys will be doubling up on goodies this year as they both lost teeth in the past couple of days. We told them that the tooth fairy will be hitching a ride on Santa’s sleigh to our house. I’m pretty excited to see everyone’s reaction in the morning. I think we did a pretty good job this year. Until then, I think I’m gonna try to get some shut-eye. I’ll try to post the goodie list sometime later on. Hope everyone has a wonderful Christmas.

Sorry I didn’t post on Christmas, but it was such a busy day. I honestly don’t know which is busier, Christmas day or the day after. All the kids need help playing with their new toys, cleanup is a big job, many people have visitos that are leaving, all that food needs to be stored and put away… or eaten.

The kids seem to be happy with their presents this Christmas. Victoria got a lot of new clothes and some perfume, Brian got his GameBoy and some games, and Will got a Leapster with a couple of games as well. Amy got some jewelry and a Food Saver, and I scored a couple of really nice sweaters and a shirt. It was nice having James and Ann come down to spend Christmas and the kids loved having them here. My sister, Mel called me from Jen and Terry’s house and proceeded to pass me along to everyone that was over there. It was a great conversation, and I have to say that I do miss them all.

Tomorrow night is Christmas at Ruby and LD’s, which is always a good time. I’m sure their house will be packed full with relatives and food will be just as plentiful. Wednesday evening will be dinner at my Mom and Dad’s as they will have returned from Knoxville by then and will be eager to see the kids. Thursday, the boys will be heading up to Raleigh to spend a few days with James and Ann and will be back with us on Saturday. Whew… I hope I got everything
