The blog has been really quiet the past few weeks, but we surely haven’t. I have just added a VERY limited version of our family tree to the blog. I also included a link to it in the sidebar under the “Pages” section. Unfortunately, It only shows my side of the family… leaving the Coats out in the cold. BUT – have no fear! If you would like to see the full version of the family tree… including my current additions for the Coats/Sarvis/Fairmans/Higgins/Capistranos/Bautistas, just leave a comment below, or fill out the contact form, and I will be more than happy to send you an invite to geni.com as either a friend or part of the family. Once you have joined, you will be able to view the family tree in all of its glory and also be able to make additions or edits. In fact, I encourage you to do so.

Coming up: Reba and Kelly, Old Salem, and New Friends.

I’m laughing like crazy at an ongoing email thread that is currently taking place among the Coats women. I won’t go into all the gory details, but the subject of the thread is about New Year’s Goals: weight loss – tips/tricks, and motivation, and a couple of exercise ideas.

It was pointed out that this blog could be a source of motivation since I had recently published our Christmas Holiday Pictures online, and that perhaps some of my photos were not as flattering as some had hoped.

Well ladies, rest easier. I can assure you that these photos were all taken in the worst possible light and at the worst angle by the worst photographer – ever. In fact, the better quality photos were not taken by me at all, but by my youngest son – Will-6.5. I guess he and Victoria are just naturally talented at photography.

I’d also like to take this time to point out a new section in the sidebar of this blog. If you let your eyes wander over to the right – just under the “Recent Comments” section, you will find a new section called “My shared items.” –ok the title sucks. I’ll come up with a better one later. Anyhoo, This section is a list of articles from different blogs I read that I found interesting enough to share with others. They usually range anywhere from technology, to budget living, to personal productivity. The list only shows the 7 most recent articles I’ve shared through my favorite RSS newsreader, google reader, but you can click the “read more…” link at the bottom of the box to check them all out… There’s even an article or two on weight-loss and motivation!

[tags]pictures, Coats, weight loss, motivation, New Year, Will, Victoria, photography[/tags]

A couple of cool apps have been brought to my attention on my quest to Getting Things Done:

MindMeister is a new mind mapping webapp that lets you share your mind maps with others on the web. It also lets you import and export mind maps to and from Freemind – which I currently use, and Mind Manager.

Thinking Rock is a great piece of software strictly for GTD. I have demoed this before, and liked it, but I felt I needed to use the same system for both Home and Work. The problem is that at work, I use a Gentoo Linux workstation, and at home – until I buy my new PC, I’m still using windows. Luckily, someone in the Gentoo community decided to create an ebuild for Thinking Rock. I will be installing it at work this week and testing it. I’ll let you know how it goes.

On another Note, WordPress now has an official repository for plugins that can be used with their wonderful blogging software. If you have a wordpress blog, you will want to add this to your bookmarks.

I finally updated the blog to support the “widgets” capability in WordPress. For the most part, I like the cleaner look of the sidebar, however the Widget for the UTW plugin isn’t as clean as I’d like it. Seems to be missing a formatting tag somewhere, but I haven’t the time yet to look into it. As you can see, it seems as if the font for the tag cloud isn’t the same as the list items in the other modules. I’m going to keep it for the time being, but, if I can’t figure out how to clean it up soon, I might revert back to the old way.

I was able to fix the comment enumeration problem by updating to the latest release of Spam Karma2. While I was at it, I went ahead and upgraded to the latest Ultimate Tag Warrior which came with a complete set of instructions on how to create a dedicated page for a Tag Cloud Archive. You can see what it looks like by clicking the the Archive link in the horizontal menu above or through the Pages heading in the sidebar.

I’m seriously considering changing themes. While I like this theme, I’m trying to figure out a decent theme that I can integrate with the proposed rest of the site… That is, if I ever get to working on it. I read an article today that would bridge SMF forums with WordPress. Seems pretty interesting, but to be honest, I’m not getting much feedback from my target readers.(Except for Terry… Thank God for you, my friend!)

Anyway, I was hoping that by integrating forum software, that it could be used for planning family events or discussion on the proposed family tree project. Not that this site has any sized reading base, but just planning for the future…
